How to Prepare for an Online Tarot Reading

Your Reading Begins Before We Even Connect
One of the questions I hear most often from new clients is: "Do I need to do anything before my reading?" The answer is yes — and it doesn't need to be complicated. A little intentional preparation can make the difference between a reading that feels surface-level and one that genuinely moves you. Whether you've booked a 30-minute session or a full 60-minute deep dive, these steps will help you arrive open, grounded, and ready to receive.
1. Choose a Quiet, Comfortable Space
Your environment matters more than you might think. For an online reading, you don't need anything elaborate — just a space where you feel calm and won't be interrupted. Close the door, let your household know you need some uninterrupted time, and if possible, sit somewhere that feels a little special to you. A favourite chair, a corner with soft lighting, a spot near a window — anywhere that signals to your nervous system: this is sacred time.
Silence your phone notifications (except for the call itself), close unnecessary browser tabs, and give yourself permission to be fully present for the duration of your session. The more settled your outer environment, the more easily your inner wisdom can surface.
2. Set the Mood
This is entirely optional, but many clients find that small rituals help them shift from the busyness of daily life into a more receptive state. Consider lighting a candle, burning a little incense or sage, placing a crystal nearby, or simply making yourself a warm cup of tea. These aren't requirements — they're invitations. Small acts of intention that say: I am here. I am ready. I am open.
If you have a spiritual practice — prayer, meditation, breathwork — even five minutes of that before your session can help you arrive in a much more grounded and open state.
3. Clarify Your Questions
This is perhaps the most important step. The tarot responds to the energy and clarity of your questions, so it's worth taking a few minutes beforehand to think about what you actually want to explore. You don't need to have everything perfectly articulated — the cards often take us in unexpected and necessary directions — but having a general sense of your focus helps enormously.
Some questions to ask yourself before your session:
- What area of my life feels most uncertain or in need of guidance right now?
- Is there a decision I've been sitting with that I'd like clarity on?
- Is there a relationship, career situation, or personal challenge I want to explore?
- What do I most need to hear right now, even if I'm not sure what that is?
Open-ended questions tend to yield the richest readings. Rather than "Will I get the job?" try "What do I need to know about this career opportunity?" Rather than "Does he love me?" try "What is the true nature of this relationship and what do I need to understand about it?" The more open your question, the more the cards can speak.
4. Come With an Open Mind
Tarot is not fortune-telling in the way popular culture often portrays it. The cards don't deliver fixed, unchangeable verdicts about your future. They offer a mirror — a reflection of the energies, patterns, and possibilities present in your situation right now. The future is always in motion, shaped by your choices, your awareness, and your willingness to grow.
The most powerful readings happen when clients arrive curious rather than desperate, open rather than attached to a specific answer. If you come hoping the cards will confirm what you've already decided, you may miss the deeper message they're trying to deliver. Come willing to be surprised. Come willing to hear something that challenges you. That's where the real transformation lives.
5. Have Something to Write With
I always recommend having a notebook or journal nearby during your reading. You may want to jot down the cards that come up, key phrases that resonate, or insights that arise during our conversation. Readings can be rich with information, and it's easy to forget the details once the session ends and daily life resumes. Your notes become a record you can return to — especially as the themes the cards highlighted begin to unfold in your life over the following days and weeks.
Some clients also find it helpful to record the session (with permission) so they can listen back later with fresh ears.
6. Give Yourself Time Afterwards
A meaningful tarot reading can stir things up — in the best possible way. Insights surface. Emotions move. Clarity arrives that you weren't expecting. Whenever possible, try not to schedule your reading right before a busy meeting or a stressful commitment. Give yourself at least 15–30 minutes afterwards to sit quietly, journal, or simply let what came up settle.
The integration period after a reading is often where the real magic happens. The cards plant seeds — and those seeds need a little stillness to take root.
You Are Already Ready
If you've read this far, you are already more prepared than most. The fact that you're approaching your reading with intention and care tells me everything I need to know about the kind of client you are — and the kind of reading we're going to have together.
I hold every session as a sacred space: confidential, compassionate, and completely non-judgmental. Whatever you bring, whatever you're navigating, you are welcome here exactly as you are.
I look forward to reading for you. 🌙
